GCE and EFQM

A first-class performance takes the company up to the second level: GC EUROPE is "Recognised for Excellence"
A sustained, consistent and certified record of top-class performance: The European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) has decided to reward the dental company GC EUROPE by giving it one of its prestigious European awards. The internationally renowned foundation for quality management, which has its headquarters in the Belgian capital Brussels, has performed another systematic assessment of the dental care company using a comprehensive management model that looks at processes and results as well as employee and customer focus. As a result, GC EUROPE has now been given the second EFQM quality award. This "Recognised for Excellence" status means that the firm has moved a step further on the way to the European quality prize, the "European Excellence Award". The "Recognised for Excellence" certificate was awarded to GC EUROPE in mid-December 2008 in the Belgian town of Leuven.

For many years the company, which is the European subsidiary of the GC Corporation, has set its sights at achieving business excellence. Two years ago GC EUROPE was granted the first-level award, "Committed to Excellence". It has now shown that it aims not only to offer dentists and dental technicians the products they need for their current and future work, but that it also wants to measure its performance against that of other firms, especially those which EFQM regards as being the best and most widely respected in Europe.

"Our corporate goal is consistent top-class performance!"
This second award was granted following intensive project activities by management and staff, comprehensive documentation and a joint assessment workshop with EFQM assessors at which GC scored between 450 and 500 RADAR points (the benchmark for the award is 300 points). The concluding site visit made by a team of three EFQM assessors in the winter of 2008 was the final step towards granting the "Recognised for Excellence" award.
"It is only by raising the bar a little each time, benchmarking ourselves against other successful firms and understanding our own strengths and areas where we could improve, that we can systematically progress and achieve high quality and excellent results over the long term", explained Henri Lenn, President of GC EUROPE, who firmly believes in his company's ability to perform. "We have been greatly encouraged by the very positive feedback we received from the team of assessors, and so over the next two years we will be working hard towards the next level of excellence: becoming a finalist in the competition for the "European Excellence Award" (EEA), the most prestigious award for business excellence."

Excellent in every respect: GC EUROPE is "Committed to Excellence"
Sustained outstanding performance at all levels: after the internationally renowned Deming Award for Business Excellence in 2000 and the Japan Quality Medal in 2004, the traditional Japanese firm GC has now been recognised again for its extensive quality efforts - this time by the European Foundation for Quality Management. The subsidiary company GC EUROPE has thus become the first European dental company to be awarded the seal of quality of the European Foundation for Quality Management - EFQM. With its "commitment to excellent performance", the company has successfully completed the first phase on the journey to the European Quality Award. The "Committed to Excellence" certificate was presented to GC EUROPE in early December during a ceremony at the company's head offices in Belgian Leuven.

Certification followed a year of intensive preparation and project work. In December 2005 the senior management team with all the employees had undertaken a self-assessment firmly based on EFQM checklists as a first step in the certification process. They then analysed the company’s strengths and areas for improvement and developed individual action plans from these findings.

Self-knowledge through self-assessment
Over the next eight months, the second step involved systematically tackling three improvement projects in the categories of customer service, internal communication and systematic introduction of comparative examination with best practice and the assessment based on key indicators - with sustained success. Thus the internal inspection by a EFQM Validator in mid-November 2006 finally led to the company receiving the recognition of "Committed to Excellence".
Dr. Paul Bachmann, Senior Quality Manager at GC EUROPE, is very pleased: "We did put a lot of time and commitment into the projects and the outcome is entirely positive for all our employees. The structured self-assessment, in particular, threw up a lot of new ideas and showed us what excellent achievements our company is capable of. Through the individual projects we can now plan and handle further actions more efficiently - for even greater customer, employee and value-added orientation."

EFQM recognition as an incentive to achieving reliable quality
Henri Lenn, President of GC EUROPE, is also delighted by the EFQM recognition and sees the certificate as significant proof of his company's high performance level: "Our philosophy is that quality is the core of any business process. This is the only way to build trust and achieve long-term success for everyone involved. Since our parent company, GC Corporation, has dedicated itself to the concept of quality for more than eight decades, it was natural for us as the European subsidiary to take part in an EFQM recognition programme. This award now confirms the efforts we have made to achieve reliable quality and will spur us on to complete the next stage."
